PARENTING - Be Your Childs First Teacher by Kay Green
Copyright 2006
We are our child's first and best teacher. It is up to us to teach them all the important stuff in life. I love that I get to teach my children to walk, ride a bike, read, spell their name, potty train, to speak truth, to follow rules, and to stay safe.
TALKING & BABY SIGN - I teach my babies to talk by talking and singing to them all thru out the day. At age 6 months I begin introducing sign language signs as I speak to them. I start with the sign for MILK for every nursing or bottle. I found they are able to start signing about 8-9 months. Waving Bye-bye is their first sign! Then about that time they can learn MILK and MORE and ALL DONE. Our new Baby Sign Language Cards
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/baby-sign-language.html will help you with the beginning signs.
POTTY TRAINING - I have taught all of my 4 children to use the toilet before their second birthday. I find their is a window between 20-24 months when they are very ready. I read the Toilet Training in Less than a Day book. Then I take a week to focus on this new skill for my child. To me I teach going potty just like I teach them to use a spoon and a cup. We have a POTTY PARTY day to start the process. before that I get rid of all paper diapers and pull-ups. I put them in CLOTH training pants. I reward every success with stickers or prizes.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/potty-training.html I remind them and practice walking to the potty after every accident. Usually it takes about a week to have the training done. Every day will be a few less accidents and a few more successes. I take a fold up potty chair with me when out of the house.

INTEGRITY - It is our job to teach our children about truth and honesty. They learn by our example. Do we always tell the truth in front of them? Or do we say they are 4 rather than 5 because their dinner will be cheaper? Do we follow the rules in front of them? Or do we try to get them around the rules when we want to. They will learn more by what they see us say and do than what we try to teach them.
RULES APPLY - How often do we think rules do not apply to us. I was at a hotel pool this weekend. The sign stated children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent at all times. Yet there was two children ages 8 & 9 there alone for a long time. They told me their name, all about their mom, how old she was and more private information. They invited us to their hotel room. There mom was putting them at risk by not following the rules. The kids knew the rules but stated that mom said to coming anyways. What is she teaching her kids? We do not have to know WHY a rule is made in order to follow the rule.
STAYING SAFE - It is also my job to teach my child about staying safe. I do that by having her wear an ID bracelet at all times. She knows my cell phone number is inside. I have taught me daughter that if mommy is lost to find another mommy with children and show her the bracelet and have her call mommy. I also teach her to be safe by playing Safetyville Game
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/safety-game.html where she can play act scary situations and what to do. I teach her by watching safety videos
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/stranger-danger.html with her and talking about the What Ifs?. It is my job to keep her prepared for dangerous situations.

Names by Nicole provides poems for and about children, written from their name. Each poem is unique, just like your child. Each letter of your child's first name starts a new line of the poem. And since each poem is written for an individual, she can include their middle name, special talent, or favorite activity as well. FROM KAY: Nicole made a beautiful poem for my daughter 18th birthday. My daughter was thrilled because it contained things about her personally.

ADOPTION
ADOPTION: Separation and Loss Issues
By Becky Birtha
When a description says a child has separation and loss issues, what can an adoptive parent expect?
Any child who is adopted will have some separation and loss issues. If a child was adopted as an infant, these issues may surface later. Children adopted as toddlers will feel grief over losing the important people in their lives, even though they can't express it in words. School-age and teenage children who have been in the foster care system may have experienced numerous losses and separations– from siblings, extended family, foster families, and social workers, as well as from their birth parents.
Having a child join the family through adoption is a happy event. But new adoptive parents should remember that, for the child being adopted, moving to a new family is also an experience of loss, whether it is loss of a foster family, a best friend, a familiar routine, or a country, culture and language.
Children and teenagers react to loss and grief differently from adults. When a loss happens, some children feel immediate grief, while others may deny the loss. Long-term denial or avoidance of grief is unhealthy and can result in more severe problems.
Parents should be aware of what normal childhood responses are, as well as knowing the danger signals.
One common reaction to loss is anger, which is often directed toward the new adoptive parent. Anger may also be expressed in rough play, nightmares, irritability, or challenging behavior. Many children regress and display babyish behavior. Teenagers respond to separation and loss in a variety of ways. Some responses are constructive, such as talking with a friend, keeping a journal, or using the arts. But some teens turn to destructive activities, such as drug and alcohol abuse, or social withdrawal.
Adults can help a grieving child by listening, answering questions, giving the child permission to show feelings openly, and reassuring the child that he or she will be taken care of. They can remember that a child's grief may be felt anew when memories are triggered by an event or a new loss, or when the child reaches a new developmental stage, with an increased ability to understand adoption. And they can be alert to the warning signals, including extended depression or regression, loss of interest in daily activities, changes in sleep patterns or appetite, or a drop in school performance. When these appear, it's time to seek professional help.

HOME BUSINESS - Home Business Professionals
Home Business Professionals are unique people. We are all very different people, with very different personalities and thinking processes. However, all successful home business professionals have the following characteristics in common.
1. Home business professionals are usually leaders, not followers. We like to set the standards, not adhere to them.
2. Home business professionals are always looking for new and better ways to do things. We believe that there is always a better, more effective way to get things done, and we seek to find it.
3. Home business professionals are very open-minded. We never say that an idea won't work without looking at all the facts, and if possible, testing the theory in question.
4. Home business professionals are generally very organized. We are our own bosses. There is nobody to tell us when, or how, to get things done. It is something we must do for ourselves, and being organized is usually the first step in getting things done effectively.
5. Home business professionals are hard workers. We know that starting a business is hard work, with long hours. However, we know that eventually, we will be able to work fewer hours and enjoy the same success. However, we do understand that work will always be involved, even if the hours are shorter.
6. Home business professionals like to help out others. If you talk to a home business professional, the chances are good that you will find that person does charity work of some sort.
7. Home business professionals are honest in their business dealings. When they see others being dishonest, they are quick to call them on it, and point it out to others.
8. Home business professionals are very dedicated. We love what we do. It is something we have chosen for ourselves. We make our own rules, and we love "going" to work each day. Our love for what we do drives us to do it better than anyone else and keeps us very motivated.
9. Home business professionals are very energetic. We don't have the stresses that the people in the corporate world have. We are not a part of the rat race. This allows us to have more energy. While traditional corporate employees tend to go home from work and stretch out on the couch to watch television, home business professionals walk out of their home offices ready to go have fun. We have alot of energy left over at the end of the day.
10. Home business professionals are happy people. We love what we do. We've made our own rules, and we are living the lives that we have chosen to live. Who wouldn't be happy?
