Sensory Safe Toys & Activities
by Kay Green copyright 2005
My youngest child was recently diagnosed with Sensory Integration disorder. And my third child was a kinesthetic learner child. So over the course of time I have founds toys and activities that sensory and kinesthetic children love. I wanted to give my children toys that were safe but gave them sensory input.
Taggies produce a wonderful line of
blankies, toys and books with a sensory feel. Taggies have tags of satin ribbon sew in folds all around the edges. Babies love to rub these satin tags between their fingers and on their face. The fleece of the blankets are soft and comfortable. The 12x12 Taggie Small makes a perfect travel companion for babies and toddlers.
Taggies also make a Take-a-long toy with the same fleece and tags. It hooks easily to the car seat or stroller to take with you. The newest Taggies product is the I Love You Book with tags sewn on the edges. I love to take these with me in the car seat and stroller. Sensory kids love to have a familiar item they can count on when going to new places. It gives them a calm feeling.
Discovery Toys carries a line of safe sensory rattles that your babies will love. These are the highest quality safe toys your children will love. My favorite is the rain stick rattle. It is filled with bright colored beads the fall up and down the stick making a soothing sounds. I needed to have a good variety of these kinds of rattles and baby toys so I could swap them in and out of our bag keeping her interested.
Shopping carts present a new challenge for sensory kids. They want to experience everything, and most through their mouth. I always worried if the last child in that seat was ill or well? And have you ever had a diaper leak in the cart UGH So I found a great
shopping cart cover that not only protects my child but also gives them a sensory delight with attached toys and fabrics that make a great crinkle noise that my baby loves
As Haley has gotten to preschool age I was looking for a take a long toy that gives her sensory input. This is especially important when taking her to new environment. A friend gave her a used older Game Boy color. I was able to find age appropriate games for her at some game resale shops. I can put in ear phones which keeps the game much quieter. She has really enjoyed this.
Another great sensory item that we obtained is a small jogging trampoline. It is small enough tot fit in my living rooms. Haley loves to bounce and then jump to the couch or into the bean bag chair. I taught her counting using this trampoline. I found one for under $30 at Fred Meyer.
I also purchased a 65 cm exercise ball. Haley loves to roll and bounce on it. To give her added sensory feedback I have her sit one it. Then I hold her by the hips and roll her side to side. She works at bringing her body back to center, It is hard work and gives her a great sensory work out.
As you can see I have found some great toys and activates for my children. I have learned that meeting their sensory needs makes them calmer and more in tune with their world. Having an appropriate sensory diet each days makes us all happy. If you have found some great sensory toys please let me know so I can add them to my list.

20 Tips to Increase Web Traffic
By Kay Green - copyright 2005
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/articles/increase-your-web-site-traffic.html
1. Make your web site inviting with enough information and resources to keep your traffic coming back. Do not have too many gadgets or distracting things on the opening page. Add things to bring them back. Once there, make sure they can see HOW to order.
2. Contests - Run a contest to get new site visitors. I run my quarterly contest for newsletter signups - which give me 3 months to reach them 3 times with my products and specials. Get this page listed in the many contest directories online. This gives you a LINK BACK.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/contest-drawing.html
3. Freebies - again search the web for free things on line that you an offer to your visitors. Then list your freebies page on the many freebies directories. This gives you a LINK BACK. Offer a free download sheet for your customers. A color sheet for children. Safety Tips for parents.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/free.html
4. Newsletter - I do a monthly newsletter to 1000 parents where I share articles, tips, recipes, and ideas on my area. I also offer a coupon code for a discount on one of my products and promo new products in that issue. I use yahoo groups to send this out. Then I create page on my site for each newsletter. Then I create a newsletter directory for a year s worth of newsletters.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/preciouskids/
5. Resources - Create a page listing resources your customers might like.
Keep it relevant to your site and target audience. What information would your target audience be looking for.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/wahm-resources.html
6. FREE e-books to download. Write it yourself or get mine
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/downloads/50tips.pdf
Lots of authors will allow you to give away their e-book for free if you link tot heir site too.
7. Donate a product as a prize for a contest on another site. This gives you a LINK BACK. Often the owner will ask the entrant to visit your site to answer a question. The winner gets to try your products for free and may come back to order again.
8. Do link exchanges with other web sites that have similar customers.
Create a LINKS page where you put other sites text link and description.
Create a LINK TO US Page with a form they can fill out to be added to your site.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/link-to-us.html
9. Offer an free affiliate program. Mtracker offers free tracking at
http://www.mals-e.com
See mine at
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/affiliate.html
And affiliate program allows you to pay a commission to other sites for selling your products.
10. Do browser open exchanges like
http://www.wahmhits.com or others that target your audience. This puts your site in front of other site owners. My site ahs gained 13,000 views this way.
11. Use your URL email for all correspondence. People will remember what my url is when I use
Kay@mypreciouskid.com rather than
kay@yahoo.com
12. Get your own domain name URL.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com is more easily remembered than
http://members.hypermart.net/mypreciouskid.com/index.htm
Domains are only
$8 a year a well worth the investment. To be looked at as a professional business, your own domain name I a must.
13. Use your advertising dollars wisely. Be sure you are reaching your targeted audience. Get listed in directories with high traffic and targeted markets. Barter advertising space with other sites.
14. Find your niche and stay with it. Become an expert on one topic rather than every topic. Expert of one is better than mediocre of many. Do what you do well!!
15. Make sure your web site directs your traffic to where you want them to go. Is it easy to navigate? Do they know where to go to find what you sell?
Have you given them reasons to buy from you? Do they know how? Have your contact info on EVERY page including an email link. Have a privacy policy.
Help them feel they can trust you.
16. Add customer comments that give new customers a peace of mind in buying from you. Include the comment maker’s web address or email if possible so they can verify them. Ask every customer to write a product review in exchange for a discount on their next purchase.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/comments.html
17. Write articles on your subject of expertise. Offer them to newsletters, web sites, and ezines. Your bio line at the end will include your web site and bring added traffic and increase your notoriety as an expert in your field. Mine are at
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/articles/index.html
18. Write a press release or have it written. Submit it to all your state radio, TV and newspapers. Post it on your site. Often you can barter for this service. The best press release writers also have the ability to submit it for you as well.
http://www.mypreciouskid.com/press.html
19. Create a small site map summary as text links on the bottom of your page. Make it easy for your customers to find what they want on your site. Each key word should link to that subject on your web page.
20. Make 10 offline contacts every day. When you a meet a person give them something that puts your URL in their hands. Business card, coupon pack, sample, etc. These offline contacts will bring online traffic. Most people selling online forget this OFFLINE population they meet every week.
Remember that you are competing with several million other web sites. All these things work but take time. Online marketing is about those who stay with it, work diligently and consistently and build their business both online and offline by creating community with others. What you do today may make an impact 4, 6 or 8 weeks from now!

SAFETY
Brrr! It's definitely winter here in the Carolinas! Snow backed up traffic in Raleigh, NC today with some people being stuck in traffic for 5 hours!!! Four different schools have children spending the night because driving conditions were too hazardous for the buses and parents could not get through the traffic to pick up their children! People are in ditches and cars are stalled. An older couple found themselves stranded for more than 4 hours after going off the road into a ditch. Police could not get to them sooner...they had to attend to more serious accidents.
So...what have you done to prepare for any emergency that may mean you are stuck in your car for an extended period of time? Think about what is necessary and what can keep you comfortable should you get stuck in freezing temperatures.
To start off with, find a car organizer. Put all items that you can fit into it so you will have an easy time to finding them when the emergency arises. I personally think that Kid's Organizer that is sold at
http://www.thebusywoman.com
is the perfect one for this! It may say it's for kids, but it has so many more uses! And it's the perfect size to pull together everything you need for emergencies. Just make sure that the organizer you choose is a good size for carrying the needed items.
Next, pull together items that will assist you in the case of emergency. A small first aid kit sold at
http://www.mypreciouskid.com in case you have had an accident and someone finds themselves with minor injuries is a must! Some good extras would be some flares and a flashlight (check those batteries on a regular basis!) You might even want to throw in an extra pack of batteries for that flashlight JUST IN CASE!
Consider a few of the small emergency flashers that you can set around your car. They could also be useful if you find yourself in a ditch and your car is sitting lower than the road. Place one of these emergency flashers on the top of your car to help alert authorities where you are.
Now think of comfort. A blanket, a bottle of water (or two), and if you're anything like me, a book to read (provided you have daylight.) If you carry other people with you on a regular basis, like the youngsters, make sure to have a blanket for each row of seats that are regularly used in the vehicle. For most people that would be two, but if you drive a mini-van, then consider a 3rd one as well. And for those with kids, keep some objects that can keep the kids busy! Wal-mart sells these wonderful little travel games for a very small price and the kids can play these while waiting for help. It helps take their mind off the situation and calms them. And if you want, throw in some snacks that will keep for a while. We all know that Twinkies will survive a nuclear war...so why not throw a few of them in the organizer.
You might want to throw in a few pairs of gloves or extra hats in case you do need to get out of your vehicle for any reason. Think of things that will help you and your passengers stay warm until help arrives.
And of course, if at all possible, have a cell phone with you when driving in hazardous conditions! You don't want to find yourself walking to find a payphone to get help!
